Literacy Education
I selected literacy to be the concentration of my Master's Degree because as an Art Educator I wanted to develop a unified connection toward the understanding of the written and spoken word in conjunction with how we view images for understanding. Throughout this experience I was able to incorporate the use of images as a means of conveying information and supporting the material presented via traditional literacy.

For this portion of the course we looked critically at both the images and the words presented within several picture books written for the intended audience of young and adolescent readers. During the extent of this course I had the privilege of working cross-curricular with supporting teachers from the Language Arts Department as well as the ESOL teachers in order to develop a case study of a English Language Learner. Through observation and implementation of strategies presented in the course a case study was developed to aid in the further advancement of our students literary needs. Upon the viewing of the movie Whale Rider, directed by Niki Caro, I analyze a scene depicting an exchange between me main character and her father. The breakdown provided in this essay depicts how much information the image contains that the symbolism hidden in the body language and actions of the characters are vital to understanding the content of the story. EAD - 846 - Bringing visual literacy into the classroom
This is a lesson plan that I developed and utilized within my own classroom as a way to connect themes researched in historical documents and literature to the events and visual culture that they encounter through contemporary culture. Visual Literacy Lesson Plan TE - 849 - Format Reflection
During this module we studied how different formats, all presenting the same material, effect the viewers interpretation of the content. First by reading Neil Gaiman's Coraline then reading the graphic adaptation by P. Craig Russell, and finally by viewing the movie directed by Henry Selick I broke down how the story can be envisioned across the various formats and the relationship between how we comprehend the material when it is presented it's written from or when accompanied by visuals.
